Education Initiatives

There are a number of film workshops and courses available to primary and secondary school students.

School Screenings organised by IFI and the Arts Council

This programme includes film screenings, talks, workshops, teacher training and provision of educational materials. It aims to promote Irish film, support the school curriculum and broaden the film experience for young people.


Cinemagic Education Outreach (Northern Ireland)

Education outreach works throughout the year with school and youth groups across Northern Ireland, offering a programme of hands-on educational opportunities for teachers and students. Events range from careers seminars to production training, film criticism to media literacy workshops with top industry professionals.


Cinemagic Into Film Club (Northern Ireland)

Into Film Clubs is a Northern Ireland Screen after-schools initiative designed to reduce disadvantage and is funded by the Department of Culture Arts and Leisure. The scheme is managed by Cinemagic and the Nerve Centre.


Young Irish Film Makers summer camps

One-week film camps are run at the Young Irish Film Makers studios in St. Joseph’s Studios, Kilkenny. Young people will be guided through interactive workshops in all aspects of film making, from writing the script to shooting the movie and creating their own director’s cut.


Young Irish Filmmakers Outreach

Young Irish Film Makers have dedicated film training facilitators that head out all over the country to schools, community groups and youth organisations. The majority of work in schools is done with Transition Year and School Completion Programmes.


Young Irish Filmmakers Youth Film training workshops 

After-school workshops in filmmaking, digital media and acting for television for young people in Kilkenny. Ages 12-18.


Summer filmmaking short courses by the Digital Film School

Each summer the award-winning Digital Film School runs "make-a-movie" courses for Teenagers and Adults in Dublin. This intensive five-day, hands-on, course covers all the elements of filmmaking. Students will write, direct and edit their own short film. On completion of the course, all students will take home a DVD of the finished film.

Transition Year Workshops by the Digital Film School

Make-a-movie in a day workshops are facilitated by Dublin-based Digital Film School in countless different schools all over the country from Kenmare to Letterkenny. Film training for nationwide youth filmmaking is also facilitated for competitions including 'Decent work' for the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and 'X-HALE' for the Irish Cancer Society.

Cinemobile Schools Programme

A selection of films are screened which correspond to comparative film texts and film adaptations of English texts on the Leaving Cert English curriculum as well as a number of foreign language films.
