A Selection of Irish Oscar Nominated and Winning Short Films to Screen in NYC This Week

10th Sep 2012
IRISH FILM NEW YORK, in association with the Film Society of Lincoln Center, will present two nights of Irish Oscar winning and nominated shorts this week. The series will be introduced by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Naomi Sheridan and it will run in the prestigious Elinor B. Munroe Theatre at the Film Society of Lincoln Center on Wednesday and Thursday September 12th and 13th.

The programme will showcase four Oscar nominated and Oscar winning films including this year's winner The Shore. Filmed on location in Killough, a small village in County Down, this film tells the story of a Northern Irish man (Ciarán Hinds) as he returns to Ireland for the first time in twenty five years. His daughter urges him to reunite with his childhood friend and humour and heartfelt emotion unfold as the misunderstanding that has kept them apart all these years is unravelled.

The one hour and 20 minute short film programme includes Brown Bag Films animated short film Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty and the emotionally charged film The Door directed by Juanita Wilson (As If I Am Not There). Beautifully shot in the visually stunning desolate contaminated lands of Chernobyl, The Door focuses on a family as they desperately try to cope with the effects of the awful 1986 tragedy. The last short film in the programme is the Oscar winning dark comedy Six Shooter which was written and directed by Martin McDonagh (In Bruges). This film follows the unexpected and intense tale of a recent widower (Brendan Gleeson), as he encounters a strange and possible psychotic fellow passenger on a train to Dublin.
