Dublin Takes Centre Stage in Bollywood Blockbuster EK THA TIGER

1st Aug 2012
Some of Dublin's best known locations will be taking centre stage with the release of the Bollywood blockbuster which shot on location in Ireland EK THA TIGER on August 15th

Starring two of Bollywoods biggest stars Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif and directed by Kabir Kahn, the romantic thriller tells the tale of a man sent to Dublin on a secret mission, who falls in love with a woman studying at a fictional dance academy at Trinity College.  The film used an abundance of Dublin locations last autumn for spectacular dance sequences and stunts including Trinity College, the Shelbourne Hotel, Temple Bar and St Stephen's Green to name a few while a large number of Irish crew worked on the project which featured dozens of Irish extras.

Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board (IFB), Tourism Ireland and the films Irish producers Fantastic Films worked together to secure the film for Ireland and worked with the FILM DUBLIN Partnership, Dublin City Council and the other agencies to help facilitate filming in the city.

The films producer Aashish Singh from Yash Raj Films said: "It was a pleasure to shoot in Dublin for EK THA TIGER.  We were genuinely impressed by the Irish shooting crew as well as the support of the various agencies particularly the Irish Film Board and Trinity College.  The cast and crew of EK THA TIGER had a wonderful time in Dublin.  The icing on the cake for us from a budget point of view was the incentive under Section 481 which helped us immensely in reducing a chunk of our expenditure in Ireland".

It is estimated that the production which was the first major Bollywood blockbuster to film in Ireland contributed €1.5m to the Irish economy and created over 1,000 short-term jobs with many Irish cast and crew involved in the shoot.

The film which means ‘Once There was a Tiger' portrays Dublin as a modern, fun and vibrant city rich in history and culture.  It is set to be released in 24 countries reaching an audience of 100+ million which means images of Dublin will be projected on the big screen across the globe especially to new untapped demographics such as India's burgeoning middle and upper classes not to mention the Indian diaspora around the world.

It is already getting huge publicity in India where it is widely tipped to be the biggest Bollywood blockbuster of the year.  The first promotional clip for the film received a million hits in India within the first two days of its release on the internet.

EK THA TIGER goes on general release in India and in Cineworld in Dublin on August 15th.
