New Irish Film Outcast in Production in Galway

31st Mar 2009

OUTCAST, a new Irish film directed by Colm McCarthy begins production in Galway this week. The film is a supernatural thriller written by Colm and Tom McCarthy set around a fictional council estate in Edinburgh.

Starring James Nesbitt (Five Minutes of Heaven, Bloody Sunday), Katie Dicke (Red Road), Hannah Stanbridge and Niall Brutan in the lead roles, OUTCAST is McCarthy's first feature film having previously directed a wide range of award winning TV dramas including Spooks, The Tudors and Murphy's Law.

It tells the tale of Petronella, a Scottish/Romany girl and Fergal, her mysterious Irish traveller boyfriend. As their doomed relationship plays out, a Beast stalks the estate, killing locals, working its way towards our protagonists. Meanwhile Cathal and Liam, two mysterious travellers from Ireland use ritual and magic on a bloodhunt. Mary, Fergal's mother performs ritual and magic of her own. As Cathal comes face to face with Mary in a viscous finale we know only one thing: the Beast must die.

The project has finished three weeks filming on location in Scotland and is now filming at the Solas Studios in Galway. The production has built four film sets in the studio and will spend five weeks there including pre-production.

OUTCAST is produced by Fantastic Films with funding from Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board and Scottish Screen and international sales are being handled by Bankside Films. Fantastic Films completed filming on THE WAKEWOOD directed by David Keating late last year which is currently in post -production.
