Short Animation WE THE MASSES to Screen in the IFI

1st Nov 2012
Irish short animation WE THE MASSES directed by Eoghan Kidney will screen in the IFI ahead of Giorgos Lanthimos' ALPS from Friday November 9th.

Written by Kidney and Robyn O'Neil, the animation follows a man who falls to the ground in a barren snowy landscape. Searching to continue his fall, he discovers other men who he joins, hoping they will lead him to his destination. What he is led to is incomprehensible.

The short which picked up the Spirit Award for Animation at the Brooklyn Film Festival earlier this year was produced by Nicky Gogan for Still Films under the Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board Frameworks scheme.

Careful with its secrets, ALPS unfurls a series of seemingly unconnected scenes, moving from a disgruntled rhythmic gymnast to paramedic staff asking peculiar questions of accident victims, and a moustachioed leader of a mysterious group he names ‘Alps' because it gives no indication of what they do.  All does become clear as we get the hang of the characters' play-acting and the rules they set for themselves, but is their purpose really to bring comfort to the bereaved by substituting for their loved ones, or are there more personal agendas involved?
