Fairytale of Kathmandu

Fairytale of Kathmandu

It was as a student that director Neasa Ní Chianáin first encountered celebrated Irish poet Cathal Ó Searcaigh. Writing in her native Irish, the charismatic figure of Ó Seracaigh cast a spell on her: his poetry spoke of the land, the deep pain of lost love, and of loneliness. Years later, and by then his neighbour in the North-West of Ireland, the director was invited by Ó Searcaigh to accompany him to his spiritual home - Nepal - and film him there. For a decade the poet has made annual trips there, basking in its culture and repaying its hospitality by sponsoring young men in their studies. In this impoverished society he is regarded as a shaman, or even a god.But the more Neasa Ní Chianáin learns about the Nepalese side of Ó Searcaigh's life, the more she feels impelled to enter the action of her own film and question his motives, confronting him on camera. The answers she receives are surprising, and surprisingly honest.Official SelectionX Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam 2007 20th Amsterdam Documentary Festival (IDFA) 2007 6th Jameson Dublin International Film Festival 2008 10th Docs Thessaloniki 2008 10th DocAviv 2008 23rd Torino GLBT Festival 2008 5th Documenta Madrid 2008 34th Seattle IFF 2008 32nd San Francisco GLBT Festival 2008 20th NewFest, New York 2008 29th Durban International Film Festival 2008
