Michael Kuhn & Asif Kapadia Confirmed for the Galway Film Fleadh REAL DEAL Seminar

The REAL DEAL, The Business of Creativity film conference will once again return to this years' Galway Film Fleadh on Thursday 7th July in the Radisson hotel and this year will feature special guests Michael Kuhn (Being John Malkovich) and BAFTA winning filmmaker Asif Kapadia (Senna).

With new revenue streams, falling budgets, advances in technology and the emergence of self-distribution on multiple platforms, the Real Deal 2011 will cast an eye on the new patterns appearing and examine what effects they will have in the future of filmmaking. Comprising of four sessions and a morning with Michael Kuhn, the conference which has the theme "Real Ideas, Real Business, Real Conversations" will include debates and discussions on topics ranging from getting finance from commercial markets to finding new audiences and new ways of engaging with them.

Michael Kuhn will kick off the day-long session with a key note speech followed by an in-depth interview in the morning. Michael has a very interesting back story having set up Polygram Filmed Entertainment in 1991 which went on to make and distribute over 100 feature films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Elizabeth and Trainspotting. In 1999 he set up Qwerty Films which has produced eight films including the recent film The Duchess. His book "100 Films and a Funeral" was published in 2001 and a documentary based on it was released in 2008. With such a varied and packed career, it should make for an interesting interview and provide some inspiration in these difficult times.

The afternoon will consist of four sessions one of which will be Real Conversations: Asif Kapadia on the track to SENNA. IFB Production Executive Alan Maher will interview the BAFTA winning filmmaker Kapadia known for his visually striking films exploring characters living in timeless, extreme and unforgiving landscapes about his film SENNA, a documentary on Brazilian Formula One racing driver Ayrton Senna, who won the F1 world championship three times before his death at age 34.

With the saturation of films in the marketplace, the escalating costs of marketing and new patterns in consumption, getting films to an audience has become an even greater challenge.  The session Real Ideas: The Holy Grail, Finding an Audience will focus on the ways in which Sales Agents and Distributors are making films work while the session Real Ideas: Seeing is Believing will discuss with Irish exhibitors finding new ways of engaging Irish audiences.

The final panel of the day Real Business: Hard Cash, will feature representatives from a number of UK and Irish commercial funds who have a track record in investing in Irish projects and will discuss what gets them interested and what's the secret to bringing market money to a film project.

Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board (IFB) is delighted to be the Industry Partner of the Galway Film Fleadh.

The Irish film conference the Real Deal, The Business of Creativity is a joint initiative between Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board (IFB) and the Galway Film Fleadh. The conference will take place in the Radisson Hotel, Galway on Thursday 7th July.
