Three IFB funded shorts win prizes at Italian Festival

Three Irish shorts, THE MONK & THE FLY, FLATBED and PAPERMAN have all picked up prizes at the Novora Cine Festival in Italy.

The short animation and YouTube hit THE MONK & THE FLY won the Best Animation prize. Written and directed by Matthew Darragh and produced by Sean Smith for Souljacker, it tells the story of how a contented monk has his relaxing day disrupted by a fly. It was one of nine shorts produced through the Virtual Cinema scheme and has had over 110,000 YouTube hits to date.

The short short FLATBED won the Best Photography prize. Directed by Tom Merilion and produced by Jonny Speers for Speers Film, it received an honourable mention in the Best Short Drama category in the Galway Film Fleadh last year. The short portrays the end of a relationship and a 30-tonne articulated lorry hurtling down a deserted motorway at night.

PAPERMAN, directed by Richard Kelly and co-written by Richard and Sean Ryan, tells of a paper man's quest for love to find his paper girl. It was produced by Jessica Kelly for Prickly Pear Productions through the Frameworks scheme. Frameworks is a joint initiative between BSÉ/IFB, RTÉ and the Arts Council.

You can watch The Monk & The Fly and all the Virtual Cinema shorts on the Media Hub.
