Irish Documentary 'Dreaming The Quiet Man' To Screen in the EU Film Showcase at AFI
Sé Merry Doyle's feature documentary DREAMING THE QUIET MAN, produced by Loopline Films, will screen at this year's AFI as part of the European Union Film Showcase.
The AFI EU Film Showcase this year features 44 films from EU member states from November 3rd - 22nd.
DREAMING THE QUIET MAN takes a look at the filming of the iconic classic The Quiet Man and features an exclusive interview with Maureen O' Hara, who gives us a powerful insight into the director John Ford and her co-star John Wayne and tells us the film was a "love letter to Ireland".
Martin Scorsese explains how The Quiet Man influenced his film Raging Bull and Peter Bogdanovich talks about John Ford's obsession with his Irish identity. Jim Sheridan suggests that in Ireland the film can be unfairly criticized for stage Irishness while he believes it is a far more subtle and intelligent film than that . Some of the original extras from the film tell stories, like how John Ford brought electricity to the sleepy village of Cong.
The documentary is rich in visual landcapes from the West of Ireland and Monument Valley, the scene of so many of Ford's westerns and is narrated by Gabriel Byrne.
Dreaming The Quiet Man was co-funded by BSÉ/IFB, TG4 and BAI.
Screenings will take place in the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Screening dates and times for Dreaming The Quiet Man are as follows:
Friday 4th November 3.15; 7.20
Saturday 5th November 12.30
