The Irish box office smash THE GUARD has received two British Independent Film Awards nominations with Brendan Gleeson being nominated in the Best Actor category and director John Michael McDonagh being nominated in the Best Screenplay category.

These nominations follow what has been a phenomenal year for the comedy thriller which became the most successful independent Irish film in Irish box office history.

Other Irish BIFA nominations include Irish actor Michael Fassbender who was also nominated for Best Actor for his role in Shame; cinematographer Seamus McGarvey who received a nomination in the Best Technical Achievement category for his work on We Need To Talk About Kevin and director Cathy Brady whose short film Rough Skin is being recognised in the Best British Short category.
