Participant profile

This course is aimed at all individual screenwriters and directors working in the animation genre, with a particular focus on prospective Frameworks short film applicants and those working on animated film and television projects.

Course Outline           

This seminar will focus on the art of screenwriting in animation, aiming to provide participants with an insight into the work of four Academy Award® nominated directors, screenwriters and animators. As well as this it is hoped that the course will also stimulate creativity that can be directed towards scripts submitted as part of Frameworks applications.

  • - Adventurous early thoughts.
  • - Crafting a clear concept.
  • - The challenges and advantages of storytelling in short format.
  • - The role of the director in authoring the film.
  • - The role of the story artist in crafting the short story.
  • - The collaboration between director and producer.
  • - Crafting a short animation from American and European perspectives.

FRAMEWORKS is an established scheme for the production of animated short films which is considered to be continually successful in stimulating ground-breaking new work from Irish animators. The scheme is co-funded by BSÉ/IFB, the Arts Council, RTÉ and the BAI.

Tutors

Jim Capobianco

Jim Capobianco received the 2008 Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay for Ratatouille. He went on to write and direct the short film, Your Friend The Rat, found on the Ratatouille DVD, winning the 2008 ASIFA-Hollywood Annie Award for short films. A graduate of the California Institute of the Arts, Jim started in the story department at Walt Disney Feature Animation on The Lion King. After five years at Disney, Jim relocated to Pixar Animation Studios where he was influential on the stories of many of Pixar's films of the past 14 years. Jim directed the critically acclaimed end titles for Pixar's 2008 release Wall•E, contributed story material to UP and is currently working in development on a feature due out in 2014. In 2009 Jim finished Leonardo, his first independent film, and incorporated his own company the Aerial Contrivance Workshop (A.C.W.); a think tank for animation that focuses on preproduction and project development with a goal to educate through entertainment.

Nicky Phelan

Nicky Phelan is a graduate of Ballyfermot School of Animation. After working as a freelance animator, he joined Brown Bag Films® in 2005 where he held many roles on various animated projects. During this time he directed a number of commercials and in 2006 he created, co-wrote and directed the popular short-form animated series Crap Rap for teenagers. The series went into a second season for national broadcaster RTE in 2007. In 2008 Nicky directed the short film Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty which went on to collect 20 international awards including an Academy Award® nomination. More recently, Nicky was Animation Director on the BAFTA-nominated 3D animated television series The Octonauts and will direct the second season which starts production in late 2011. He is currently developing an original adult animated comedy series with a US network as well as a number of projects for children and family audiences.

Darragh O'Connell

 

A graduate of animation college, Darragh O'Connell co-founded Brown Bag Films with Cathal Gaffney in 1994, and as Creative Director he has forged its reputation for creating original, character-based work.  In 2002 Darragh was nominated for an Oscar® at the 74th Academy Awards® as producer of the short film Give Up Yer Aul Sins. He subsequently directed the TV series which went on to become one of the best selling Irish DVD releases of all time.

Darragh has directed dozens of animated TV commercials for international brands, as well as 52 episodes of the animation series I'm an Animal (2005), which has sold to more than 110 countries. In 2006 Darragh directed the animation for the Oasis music video, Masterplan.  In 2008 Darragh directed the 3D animated series Olivia, which he developed from Ian Falconer's beloved books, for Nickelodeon/Chorion. In 2010 he directed The Octonauts, a 3D animated series for the BBC/Chorion, which debuted as the No. 1 pre-school show in the UK and is currently nominated for BAFTA in the 2011 awards.

In 2010 Darragh was nominated for a second Academy Award® as producer of the short film Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty. His most recent short film, 23 Degrees 5 Minutes, featuring John Hurt and Stuart Townsend, premiered at festivals this summer. In 2010 Darragh became a member of the Academy for Motion Pictures, Arts & Sciences. He is currently attached to direct the 3D animated feature films Nightglider from an original script by Jeremy Shipp, and Whiplash, which is in development with screenwriter BenDavidGrabinski.

Tomm Moore

Tomm Moore is co-Founder and Creative director of Cartoon Saloon. He founded Cartoon Saloon in 1999 with Paul Young while studying animation at Ballyfermot Senior College, Dublin.  Over the company's history, he has worked as Director, Art Director, Storyboarder, Animator and Illustrator on a range of projects from commercials to service work for feature films and TV series, as well as a number of short film projects. Having completed his first feature film The Secret of Kells (Best Animated Feature Nominee: Academy Awards ®) he is currently developing his new feature film The Song of the Sea.  Tomm was also a member of the once secret crime fighting group "The Living Shadows" but failed miserably as a master of stealth, which lead to a lifelong love of comic books and animation.

Paul Young

Paul Young is a co-founder and CEO of Cartoon Saloon, Producer of the animated feature The Secret of Kells (BEST ANIMATED FEATURE NOMINEE: ACADEMY AWARDS®) and Executive Producer of the animated children's series Skunk Fu!, which has sold globally to territories including the BBC, Super RTL, Kids WB and Cartoon Network in the US. Paul is also an award winning cartoonist and illustrator.  Paul travels a lot to spread the good word.

Course Designer

Jennie Stacey                                                            

Jennie Stacey has over 14 years experience in the Film and Television industry in the development of animation and live action programming. She began her career in London in independent film production and at Little Bird Films she worked on a number of feature films, TV series and documentaries for UK and international broadcast. In 2000 Jennie joined Universal Pictures as Programming Manager of their Children & Family Programming division. At Universal Jennie worked across the production and distribution of children's animation and live action series such as Maisy(ITV /Nick Jr), Sitting Ducks (Cartoon Network), Boo! (BBC) and Hi Five!(NINE Australia/FIVE). Jennie returned to Ireland in 2005 where she joined national broadcaster RTE as Development Executive, commissioning and developing programming for their Children's and Entertainment departments. Jennie has been with award-winning animation studio Brown Bag Films since 2007, where she produces their development slate of original animated content for all platforms.
