Participant profile:
This course is aimed at experienced 3D animation artists and character riggers who wish to enhance their facial animation skills.
Tutor:
Chris Landreth started his adult life as a mechanical engineer, until he decided in 1990 that doing animation would be much more fun. Shortly after this he joined Alias Inc. (now Autodesk), where he created two CG-animated short films, ‘The End’ (1995) and ‘Bingo’ (1998). Both films explored storytelling based on human psychology as much as photorealistic character animation. He calls this approach ‘Psychorealism’. Chris continued this approach in his animated documentary ‘Ryan’ (2004). Produced by the National Film Board of Canada and Copperheart Animation, ‘Ryan’ received over 60 international awards, including an Academy Award in 2005. Chris then created ‘The Spine’ (2009), a story of a troubled marriage and its dramatic consequences, in a film that explores the dark, absurd and messy paradoxes of co-dependency. Chris is currently in production on ‘Subconscious Password’, a short film to be released in 2013. In addition to filmmaking, he teaches “Making Faces”, an intensive course on Facial Animation, to schools, universities and animation studios worldwide.
Course Outline:
From the moment we are born, we are hard-wired to see the minute details of human faces. We recognize a friend we haven't seen in 30 years, we know when someone is faking a smile, we sense something is wrong when a person breaks eye contact for a half second. We know when a face is 'right' or 'wrong' within a moment of looking at it. This workshop is an overview on creating and animating the faces of human characters which are 'right' (realistic, believable and compelling). The workshop will focus on learning about the appearance and behaviour of the face, then applying this to the faces of detailed CG-animated characters.
