Nuala: A Life and Death, Death of a Superhero and Silence All Winners at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival

The tenth anniversary of the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival (JDIFF) came to a close on the 26th of February and with this they announced their award winners. Among the winners were Bord Scannán na hÉireann / Irish Film Board (BSÉ/IFB) funded films; ‘Nuala:  A Life and Death', ‘Death of a Superhero' and ‘Silence'.

‘Nuala: A Life and Death' picked up the Best Irish Film Award. Written and produced by Patrick Farrelly and Kate O'Callaghan, the documentary tells the story Of Nuala O'Faolain through her friend, RTÉ radio presenter, Marian Finucane.

Aisling Loftus picked up the Jury Award for her performance in ‘Death of a Superhero'. Ian Fitzgibbon's film, which tells the story of a dying 15-year-old boy who draws stories of an invincible superhero as he struggles with his own mortality, closed the festival last weekend.

Eoghan Mac Giolla Bhride was honoured with the Michael Dwyer Discovery Award for his work on the film ‘Silence'. Directed by Pat Collins, ‘Silence' tells the story of Eoghan O'Suilleabháin (Mac Giolla Bhríde) an Irishman living in Berlin who has been commissioned to travel to the most remote areas in Ireland to record silence.

Other winners on the night were Michale Fuith, Best Actor, for ‘Michael' , Greta Gerwig, Best Actress, for ‘Damsels in Distress' and Nuri Bilge Ceylan was named Best Director for ‘Once Upon a Time in Anatolia'. The award for Best Screenplay went to Joseph Cedar's ‘Footnote', with ‘Samsara' winning Best Documentary. There were Special Jury Awards for Tin Can Man director Ivan Kavanagh; Play director Ruben Östlund and director-writers Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi for Chicken with Plums.

The UNTITLED screenwriting competition, where entrants had to present an idea for a feature film based on the theme '1916', was won by Jamie Hannigan and Michael Kinirons for Come Monday, We Kill Them All.
