Irish Documentary Selected to Screen at the World Famous Sundance Film Festival

Irish documentary ‘The Summit' has been officially selected to screen in competition at Sundance, the most prestigious indie film festival in the US.

This is the third Irish documentary in the past four years to be selected to screen as part of the World Cinema Documentary Competition. His and Hers directed by Ken Wardrop was part of the 2010 line up and Ian Palmer's Knuckle received its premiere at the festival last year.

Written by Academy Award winner Mark Monroe and executively produced by Academy Award winners John Battsek and Simon Chinn The Summit attempts to understand what happened on the day that became known as the most tragic in modern mountaineering history when 11 of the 22 climbers attempting to get to the summit of K2 were either killed or vanished within the space of 48 hours.

Directed by Nick Ryan, The Summit had its world premiere at the 56th BFI London Film Festival in October.

Commenting on the selection Ryan said "To be selected for competition at Sundance is one of the highest levels of recognition for any film and it is a real honor for all those who worked so hard to bring The Summit to the big screen".

Also commenting on the films selection, James Hickey CEO of Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board said The Summit is a thrilling and captivating feature documentary and its selection at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival is a great platform for showcasing Irish documentary filmmaking talent on a world stage". 

Now in its 29th year, Sundance is world renowned as a showcase for the best in new independent cinema.

The festival, which was originally founded by Robert Redford, will take place from the 17th to the 27th of January 2013 in Park City, Utah.
