Updated: IFTA 2014 nominations announced
The nominees in the categories of Animation, Feature Documentary and Short Film have also been announced.
In Animation, three projects are by Dublin's Brown Bag Films: Doc McStuffins, Henry Hugglemonster and The Octonauts. They are up against JAM Media's Tilly & Friends.
The George Morrison Feature Documentary category includes Zucca Films' Broken Song, Here Was Cuba by Crossing the Line Films, Screenworks' Natan and The Summit by Image Now Films.
Three of the four Short Films up for an IFTA are IFB funded: The Last Days of Peter Bergmann by Fastnet Films was funded under the Reality Bites scheme; The Missing Scarf by Belly Creative is a Frameworks short; and Rubaí by Magamedia is a Gearrscannáin. They are joined by SLR by Stigma Films.
The nominations were announced this morning for the eleventh annual Irish Film & Television Awards (IFTA), which will take place on Saturday, April 5th, at DoubleTree by Hilton, Burlington Road, Dublin. The ceremony will also be broadcast live on RTÉ One at 9.35pm.
In the category of Best Film, all five nominations are for IFB-supported films: Byzantium, Calvary, Run & Jump, The Sea and The Stag. Also in the category of Best Director, where John Butler is up for The Stag, Neil Jordan for Byzantium, John Michael McDonagh for Calvary, and Ruairi Robinson for The Last Days on Mars; and Best Script, with John Banville nominated for The Sea, Ailbhe Keogan for Run & Jump, John Michael McDonagh for Calvary and John Butler/Peter McDonald for The Stag.
Father and son Brendan (Calvary) and Domhnall Gleeson (About Time) will go head-to-head for Best Actor in a Lead Role; they are up against Ciarán Hinds (The Sea) and Andrew Scott (The Stag). In the Best Actress in a Lead Role category are Antonia Campbell-Hughes (3096 Days), Jane McGrath (Black Ice), Saoirse Ronan (Byzantium) and Kelly Thornton (Life's A Breeze).
IFB-supported TV show Quirke has three nods – for Best Drama; Actor in a Leading Role, TV (Gabriel Byrne); and Best Script (Conor McPherson) – while Vikings has five – for Best Drama; Best Director, TV Drama (Ciaran Donnelly); Best Costumes; Makeup & Hair; and Production Design. Ripper Street is up for six awards: Best Costumes; Best DoP, Film/Drama; Editing Film/Drama; Makeup & Hair; Production Design and Sound, Film/Drama.
Documentary Here Was Cuba has been nominated for Best DoP, Film/Drama; Editing Film/Drama; and Sound, Film/Drama, while sci-fi comedy Earthbound and The Summit are up for Best Original Score. Punky has been nominated for Best TV Programme, Childrens/Youth.
