‘Brooklyn’ Becomes the Fifth Irish Production to Screen at Sundance 2015
Irish film Brooklyn, the highly anticipated adaptation of Colm Tóbín’s novel starring Saoirse Ronan (Byzantium, Atonement) and Domhnall Gleeson (Sensation, Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens) will have its World Premiere at the Sundance Film Festival next month. This marks the fifth Irish project to screen at the festival.
Screening out of competition in the Premieres section of the festival, Brooklyn will join four previously announced Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board supported films and co-productions including Glassland, The Hallow, Strangerland and The Visit.
Commenting on the news James Hickey, IFB Chief Executive said “Having five Irish projects at Sundance is a major achievement for the Irish film industry, which will be respresented in a wide selection of categories of the festival, from international competition, to documentary, genre and major premieres. All five projects were produced with support from the Irish Film Board. We hope to achieve a large number of international sales for these films, ensuring they travel across the globe showcasing Irish talent and Irish stories to international audiences next year. Congratulations to all the teams involved”
Brooklyn is directed by John Crowley (Intermission), and stars Saoirse Ronan (Atonement) and Domhnall Gleeson (Frank). Brooklyn begins in 1950’s rural Ireland, where opportunities are scarce, particularly for young women like Eilis Lacey. When given the opportunity to emigrate to New York, Eilis knows she must go, leaving behind her mother, sister and home for the first time. The film also stars Emory Cohen, Julie Walters and Jim Broadbent.
The script was written by screenwriter and novelist Nick Hornby and filmed on location in Wexford, Dublin and Wicklow. The film was produced by Wildgaze Films, Finola Dwyer Productions, Parallel Films and Item 7. Brooklyn was co-financed by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board.
The 2015 Sundance Film Festival will take place from January 22nd to February 1st 2015 in Park City, Utah.
