Irish Psychological Thriller 'The Canal' is Released in Cinemas from Friday, May 8th

The Canal, an Irish psychological thriller funded by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board, will be released in Irish cinemas this Friday (May 8th). The film was written and directed by Ivan Kavanagh (The Fading Light, Our Wonderful Home) and stars Rupert Evans (The Man in the High Castle, Hellboy), Antonia Campbell-Hughes (Albert Nobbs, Kelly + Victor) and Hannah Hoekstra (Hemel, App).

Shot in Dublin in summer 2013, The Canal tells the story of David Williams (Evans) and his wife, Alice (Hannah Hoekstra), who move into a period house by the canal with their small child, Billy. As David begins to suspect that his wife is cheating on him, he also starts to have nightmarish visions of an evil presence he believes inhabits his home.

In a review for The Village Voice, Simon Abrams described The Canal as “a stylish Irish horror film that feels like a David Fincher–helmed Edgar Allan Poe homage.” ShockTillYouDrop.com praised The Canal as “one of the best horror movies of the year” while Badass Digest noted Kavanagh’s “fearless direction, creating an atmosphere of unflinching dread and, at times, flat-out nihilism.”

The Canal was produced by AnneMarie Naughton for Park Films, with co-producers Vaughan Sivell and Sander Verdonk, and executive produced by Treasure Entertainment’s Rebecca O’Flanagan and Robert Walpole. It also stars Kelly Byrne (Out of Here) and Steve Oram (Sightseers). The film was shot by Piers McGrail (Kelly + Victor) and edited by Robin Hill (Kill List, Sightseers). Picture and sound are by Dublin’s Egg Post Production.
