Cork Film Festival Begins Friday, 10 November with Impressive Line-up of Irish Films in Selection

The 62nd annual Cork Film Festival begins this weekend and runs until 19 November, with a a host of IFB-supported features, shorts and documentaries in the line-up.

From the world premieres of Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board (IFB) Focus and Real Shorts to Pat Collins' stunningly beautiful Song of Granite and Bharat Nalluri's tale of Charles Dickens' journey to publishing A Christmas Carol in The Man Who Invented Christmas, the festival offers an illuminating and exciting opportunity to experience some of the most exciting names in Irish filmmaking.

The IFB is also partnering with the Cork Film Festival on DocDay 2017 to bring you a day of round tables, case studies and keynote speakers to discuss all things documentary. The strong line up of speakers includes acclaimed Oscar winning producer Simon Chinn (MAN ON WIRE, SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN, MY SCIENTOLOGY MOVIE) as well as representatives from HotDocs, Tribeca, Cinetic, Impact Partners and many more. The Man Who Invented Christmas
October, 1843. Charles Dickens is struggling after a run of flops have left him both financially strapped and bereft of ideas. He’s distracted from his wife and children, irritated by his leech of a father and grumpy with his best friend and advocate John Foster (Justin Edwards). Yet the lively streets of London are a place where inspiration can strike in any moment, and Dickens has an idea to write a book set at Christmas about an unloved miser.

Song of Granite
Portraying the enigmatic and fascinating life of the great traditional Irish singer, Joe Heaney, Song of Granite, sees the beautiful yet harsh Connemara landscape combined with the myths, fables and songs of Heaney’s childhood which helped shape this complex and gifted character.

The Lodgers
The Lodgers is set in 1920's rural Ireland during its war of independence and tells the story of Anglo-Irish twins Rachel and Edward who are just about to turn eighteen. They reside in a crumbling manor on the edge of a village, where they have lived alone since their parents' untimely death. Except they are not entirely alone.

Michael Inside
Michael Inside tells the story of Michael McCrea, an impressionable teenager who is sentenced to three months in prison after being caught holding a bag of drugs for his friend’s older brother. Inside, Michael is exposed to violence and intimidation and when he is released the film looks at how prison has affected his thinking and his behaviour.
