The Young Offenders Becomes the Latest Irish Title to be Released on Netflix

Following on from grossing over €1.2m to date at the Irish box office, receiving seven IFTA nominations, and garnering critical acclaim in both Ireland and the UK with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Peter Foott’s The Young Offenders will now reach 94 million Netflix users worldwide. The Young Offenders joins a host of other Irish titles on Netflix, including John Carney’s Sing Street, John Crowley’s Brooklyn, Richie Smyth’s The Siege of Jadotville and Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster.

Speaking about the release, Patrick O’Neill, Managing Director of Wildcard Distribution who negotiated the Netflix deal alongside XYZ films said: “We’re thrilled that The Young Offenders is now going to be seen throughout the world, as well as in Ireland, on the leading Video on Demand platform Netflix”, adding that “it has been a joy to work on The Young Offenders and the amazing filmmaking team for the last 18 months, and we look forward to the next step in the journey.”

Inspired by Ireland’s biggest cocaine seizure of €440 million off the coast of Cork in 2007, The Young Offenders follows two Cork inner-city teenagers, Conor and Jock, as they embark on a 160km road trip on stolen bikes in the hopes of finding an unrecovered bale of cocaine.  It’s the debut feature from Peter Foott and introduces new acting talent Chris Walley and Alex Murphy in the lead roles with comedians Hilary Rose and PJ Gallagher also starring.

Since its premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh last summer where it was awarded Best Irish Feature, it has gone on to charm Irish and international audiences alike. It picked up an Honourable Mention for Best Comedy at the Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, picked up three awards at the LA Comedy Festival, the largest comedy festival in the US and was well received at the BFI London International Film Festival back in late 2016. The film is also nominated for seven IFTAs including Best Film and Best Director for Peter Foott.

As well as the Netflix release The Young Offenders is also available to view now across multiples online platforms in Ireland including iTunesGoogle PlayAmazon and Eir as well as on DVD which is available to purchase on the Wildcard Distribution website, iWarhousedirect.comAmazon and in all good retailers.

The Young Offenders was produced by Julie Ryan at Vico Films with funding from Board Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board.
